About Crete

Crete is the largest island of Greece and the fifth largest in the Mediterranean.
The island has a length of 260 km, and covers an area of 8,336 km²; where the 1046 kilometres are beaches. The Cretan Sea is to the North and the Libyan Sea is to the South.
The island is very mountainous and is defined by a high series of mountains that cuts across it from west to east, forming three different groups of mountains. These mountains give Crete its lush plateaus and gorges.
It is separated into the prefectures of Chania, Rethymno, Heraklio and Lasithi.
Also belonging to the Region of Crete are many small islands such as Gavdos, Dia, Koufonisi, Gaidouronisi or Chrysi, Dionysades, Spinalogga and Paximadia, most of which are uninhabited.
Its population is 601,159 persons (2001 census).
It belongs to the Mediterranean climate zone with summer weather almost all year round.
During the summer the average temperatures range from 25 to 30 degrees Celsius; resulting in approximately 300 days of sunshine per year.  
In Crete there are no polluting activities resulting in seas that are crystal clear and clean. Most foods are produced in Crete where studies have shown that the Cretan diet is one of the healthiest in the world.
The Minoan civilization flourished in Crete (approximately 3000-1400 B.C.), one of the first civilizations in Europe and according to the myth it was the birthplace of Dias, King of the gods and people.
